A Celebration of Legacy and Learning
EVERYDAY, our lives should reflect how we acknowledge and celebrate the historical and current impact various races of people have on moving mankind forward. As we thrive and apply lessons learned, we continue teaching and establishing a firm foundation for our next generations. For we all stand on the shoulders of our ancestors, who sacrificed and made significant and meaningful impacts throughout their life journey.
As I think of the giants of my own family, I recall vivid memories of my grandmother and father and their words of wisdom.
“A life of learning yields opportunities.”
“Serving God and others creates a sense of connection and community.”
“Love people where they are, changing them is not your responsibility.”
“There is only one of you, don’t waste your time living someone else’s lie.”
There are so many other nuggets I could share, but as I observed how my grandmother and father lived their lives, what impacted me most was that making a positive impact in this world does not occur on a large scale. It occurs in the incremental breaths and steps each of us take with our immediate sphere of influence. These increments create a consistent ripple in the continuum of life, gaining momentum as our bond with our sphere of influence grows more intentional, purposeful, and extensive.
Whether heritage months are highlighted or not, it is up to each of us to share our history with our sphere of influence. Pull out the family bible, photo albums, or meaningful items if you have them, share the stories. We must continue writing and publishing our own history books or producing our own documentaries. I gained significant knowledge from my grandparents and parents. The foundation of our history was laid in fertile soil, not rocky or clay ground. This foundation should be nurtured, cultivated, and renewed for future generations, promoting actions consistent with our faith and values.
My call to action today is to continue to share my voice through writing and share our family's journey with our children and grandchildren. What is your "call-to-action" today? Share it in the comments below.
Happy Birthday, Dad! Thank you and the Holy Spirit for reminding me of my mission.
